Unifrutti finalizes the acquisition of Dimifruit in Almeria

Greenhouse production of sustainable vegetables enriches the Group's offer in Europe

Unifrutti starts 2021 by focusing on diversification, finalizing the acquisition of Dimifruit in Almeria. The European operation is part of a global strategy that continues to include well-established agricultural companies with successful experiences in the Group, thus generating an increasingly complete offer. “Unifrutti is developing its production identity", explains Gianluca Defendini, CEO of the division based in Italy, "and to do so it prefers excellent crops, those that most resemble it, to enhance its international and innovative vision. Following the global strategy of the Group, in Europe we believe in productions with deep roots in their territory of origin, evolved thanks to the commitment in the field and on the markets, which practice advanced farming methods with an increasingly low environmental impact. We are building a valuable, varied and responsible offer".

The latest arrivals are Dimifruit's vegetables: tomatoes, aubergines, peppers and courgettes, all integrated pest management products and coming from greenhouses located in the European winter garden in Almeria. Here the natural desert of Tabernas, the only one in Europe, and the mountain ranges of the Sierra de los Filabres to the north, the Sierra de Alhamilla to the south and the Sierra Nevada to the west shield the cold currents of northern Europe, creating a microclimate in Almeria where natural ventilation and the absence of humidity limit the proliferation of fungal diseases and greenhouse cultivation occupies almost 40 thousand hectares.

"Dimifruit vegetables are all produced with the integrated pest management system", explains Dimitri Calabrese, CEO and founder of the company, now commercial manager of Unifrutti in Italy, "and they are already widely known by the European and Italian large-scale distribution for their quality and their low environmental impact". In the last ten years Dimifruit has experimented with new methods of cultivation in the field, with the aim of reducing the chemical impact to the lowest possible level and obtaining results on the naturalness of each crop, working since 2013 on a conversion of production in integrated pest management, reached in full in 2020. During the last agricultural season, over 5 million kilograms of tomatoes, aubergines, peppers and courgettes were distributed on the markets. The production controlled by Dimifruit is mostly winter, starting in September and ending in April, and employs about 400 workers. In Italy Unifrutti has focused on blood orange and other Sicilian citrus fruits harvested by Oranfrizer and on its farms in Italy, in Puglia and in the Marche, which produce seedless table grapes, but also flat peaches and pears that are distinctive of the territory from the Marche region.
