Despar recognized as a historic brand in Italy

The group has been present in Bel Paese since 1960

Despar is officially a historical brand of national interest. The brand has in fact obtained registration in the special register that protects national companies of excellence historically linked to the national territory. Present in Italy since 1960, the brand is characterized by a history that has always been linked to initiatives aimed at enhancing the specificities of the territories and communities. The Despar Italia Consortium, which brings together 7 food distribution companies and affiliated retailers, is present on a national level, with 1,399 points of sale in 16 Italian regions. The 2020 turnover of € 3.919 billion places Despar among the top ten brands of the Italian GDO.

The presence of a widespread sales network, support for Italian production chains, attention to sustainability issues and numerous social campaigns are the values that distinguish the work of the brand and its support for the Italian territory. “For Despar Italia, having obtained the recognition of a Historic Trademark of national interest from the Ministry of Economic Development is a source of pride and satisfaction. Despar is a food distribution brand present in Italy since 1960 and for us this recognition is of great importance, as it attests the decades of work in the service of Italians. Work based on values such as proximity to the territory thanks to the capillarity of our sales network, the enhancement of national food and wine excellence and the selection of a chain of 98% Italian suppliers for our branded products", underlines Paul Klotz , President of Despar Italy.

Spar is a cooperative company founded in the Netherlands in 1932, with the aim of uniting numerous retail stores with the same name and single brand in a single commercial chain, despite the fact that they remain legally independent. The name derives from the Dutch motto “Door Eendrachtig Samenwerken Profiteren Allen Regelmatig” (en .: From harmonious cooperation everyone benefits equally ), ie “De Spar”. “De Spar” in Dutch means among other things “the fir”, hence the symbol of the brand, that is the fir.
