Geographical indications: Brussels considers strengthening
It opens public consultation to citizens and organizations

The European Commission has launched a public consultation inviting citizens and organizations, as well as national and regional public authorities, to contribute to the evaluation of how to strengthen the system of geographical indications. The European Union protects nearly 3,400 specific product names (agricultural and food products, fishery and aquaculture products, wines, liqueurs and aromatised wine products) under one of its European quality schemes: geographical indication (Ig), protected designations of origin (PDO), protected geographical indication (Igp) and traditional specialty guaranteed (Stg).
The aim of the consultation is to gather views on the main challenges and identify those that should be addressed in the planned review, as well as the root causes of the issues, the set of policy options that can be applied to address these challenges and the impacts that would arise according to the different options chosen.
The questionnaire is available in all EU languages and can be completed via the European Commission's website dedicated to consultation. The deadline for contributing to the issue is April 9, 2021.
