Feed4Future carbon neutral offering now available for Skretting customers

First-to-market low impact feed now available for Italian farmers, taking Italian aquaculture to new levels of sustainability

Feed4Future is born, the innovative carbon neutral line feeds by Skretting based on raw materials and by-products from the food industry. About a quarter of the world's greenhouse gas emissions are generated by the food supply chain. To face the challenge of climate change it is necessary to reduce the carbon footprint by companies in the sector. Skretting Italia, banch of the Norwegian world leader in the manufacture and supply of aquaculture feeds, intends to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to a minimum, through the new concept of zero-emission feed Feed4Future. The products are characterized by a carbon footprint reduced by 10% compared to that of their competitors on the market; the remaining CO2 emissions are offset through the carbon credit mechanism.

In utilising Skretting’s groundbreaking MicroBalance technology and incorporating innovative raw materials and high-quality by-products sourced from the food industry that don’t compete with human consumption, Feed4Future diets have a 10% lower carbon footprint than standard diets, with the remaining CO2 emissions compensated for by carbon credits. (Skretting CarbonBalance’s carbon credit scheme is related to the Agrocortex REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) project in Brazil.

Umberto Luzzana, marketing manager of the company specified: "With the spotlight on the impacts generated by the food industry, Feed4Future can take Italian aquaculture a step forward in terms of sustainability. Given that 80% of the carbon footprint of fish farms is generated by feed, feeding with Feed4Future means that we are taking effective action together against one of the most far-reaching problems facing our planet today: climate change".

Skretting Italy’s new carbon neutral offering is a follow-up of its successful “Acqua in Bocca!” customer engagement project. Launched in 2017, this ongoing project is designed to help the country’s aquaculture value chain develop an effective value proposition based on sustainability that meets market expectations and requirements.

"We are thrilled with Skretting Italia's approach to sustainability and the process it has initiated, first of all listening to customer needs and then engaging with other players in the supply chain to build solutions that create value for the entire sector", says Trygve Berg Lea, Skretting Sustainability Manager. "Feed4Future and CarbonBalance are a perfect example of how local initiatives are helping us realize our global ambition to be the leading partner on the path to even more sustainable aquaculture".
