Lactalis expands into the yogurt business in Canada

The French group take a bearing of Ultima Foods

Lactalis Canada has agreed to acquire all the shares of the Canadian yogurt company of the Agropur dairy cooperative, Ultima Foods. The Lactalis Group subsidiary has not disclosed the financial terms of the transaction, which is subject to approval by Canada's Competition Bureau. The proposed agreement includes the yogurt brands Iögo and Iögo Nanö and the Olympic yogurt, sour cream and kefir brand.

"We are a Canadian-based dairy company, producing and supplying a wide variety of well-known brands; this transaction will strengthen our position in the country in the dairy category and enable key partners, both in the both retail and catering channels to meet the growing consumer demand for yogurt products", said Mark Taylor, president and CEO of the company in Canada.

The agreement also includes yogurt production facilities in Granby, Quebec and Delta, British Columbia, as well as operations at a leased distribution center in Longueuil, Quebec. Taylor continued: "Lactalis Canada's mission is to build a family legacy to delight consumers with life-enriching dairy products while providing sustainable economic and social contributions to the benefit of people, industry, partners and communities in which it operates. In line with its mission, the company is confident that this transaction will positively support the dairy farmers, retailers, consumers and communities of Granby and Longueuil, Quebec, as well as Delta, British Columbia". Earlier this year, a US subsidiary of the Group agreed to acquire The Kraft Heinz Company's "natural, grated, cultivated and specialty" cheese business for $ 3.2 billion (see EFA News article of 09-17-20 ).
