European Commission: 5 new GMOs authorized

Corn and soybean approval valid for 10 years

The European Commission, on Friday, authorized the trade of five genetically modified crops (three of maize and two of soybeans) and renewed the authorization of three other maize crops used for food and feed. All these GMOs have been subjected to a rigorous and comprehensive assessment procedure, which has led to a favorable scientific assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), explains the European Commission.

The authorization decisions do not concern the cultivation of the products. The member states did not reach a qualified majority either for or against within the standing committee and the subsequent appeal committee. Therefore, the European Commission has a legal obligation to proceed with the authorizations. Specifically, the authorizations are valid for 10 years and any product derived from these GMOs will be subject to the strict EU labeling and traceability rules.
