Canada: British Columbia taxes sugary drinks
Once the exemption has been canceled, the tax will start from 1 April. Income for Cad 30 million per year

The Canadian province of British Columbia has decided to cancel the exemption from the provincial sales tax, which today applies to carbonated drinks containing sugar, natural sweeteners or artificial sweeteners. The Provincial Sales Tax, a provincial tax of 7%, will therefore apply starting from 1 April 2021 on all soft drinks and sugary drinks sold in the territory.
According to local government calculations, revenue from the tax will be approximately $ 30 million more per year. Finance Minister Carole James stressed how the new tax is in line with the recommendations of health professionals, and how it therefore aims to preserve the health especially of young people.
