Sales register -14.8% compared to the previous year

The designation of origin of Bierzo wines closed the year 2020 with a total of 7.5 million back labels, 14.8% less than the previous year. Compared to 2018, the decrease is 7.46%.

Sales were "strongly affected especially in the months of April and May due to domestic confinement and the closure of the hotel sector, which led to a significant drop in wine consumption in Spain and around the world", says a press release. In particular, in April 2020, sales decreased by 74% compared to the same period of the previous year (from 740,760 bottles sold in April 2019 compared to 192,240 sold in April 2020), while in May the decrease was 57.11 % (from 845.302 to 362.561 in 2020).

In June, however, after the partial opening of the accommodation facilities, sales were partially resumed and there was an increase in online sales, in conjunction with the #TuVinoDelBierzo communication campaign broadcast on radio, television, press and social networks, to encourage the consumption of Do Bierzo wine. Sales in that month reached the number of 690,187 bottles, compared to 770,994 in June 2019. The drop in sales in 2020 is in line with data for the other designations of origin.

Bierzo is a Spanish protected designation of origin (PDO) for wines located in the north-west of the province of León (Castile and León, Spain) which extends over approximately 3,000 km². The Do covers 23 municipalities including the largest municipality in the area, Ponferrada (population around 70,000). Wines produced under the Bierzo Dop must necessarily contain fruit varieties authorized by the Consejo Regulador (Regulatory Council). Among these are the red grapes: Mencía and Alicante Bouschet (Garnacha Tintorera); and white grapes: Doña Blanca, Godello, Palomino and Malvasía.
