It's official: Morellino di Scansano Dop can be called Tuscan
OJ publishes amendment to the specification that allows you to insert the word "Toscana" on the label
With the publication in the Official Gazette No. 68 of 19 March 2021, the possibility of inserting the wording “Toscana” on the label of Morellino di Scansano controlled and guaranteed designation of origin (DOCG) wines is now official and fully operational. The process that led to the modification of the production specification in order to add this optional indication on the label began a little over a year ago with the favorable vote of the assembly of the Protection Consortium. "The modification of the specification was the result of intense work carried out by our Consortium in concert with the Tuscany Region, the ministry of agricultural, food and forestry policies and Avito, the Associazione Vini Toscani DOP and IGP - says Bernardo Guicciardini Calamai, president of Consortium -. Now all producers who wish to do so will be able to exploit the great strength of the 'Toscana' brand, well known and appreciated on international markets ".
Morellino di Scansano is a historical denomination, DOC since 1978 and DOCG since 2007. With the modification of the production disciplinary, the geographical name "Toscana" must follow the denomination Morellino di Scansano and be reported below the specific traditional denomination of origin. controlled and guaranteed or the expression of the European Union protected designation of origin. Furthermore, the characters of the name “Toscana” must have a lower height than the characters that make up the Morellino di Scansano denomination and have the same font (type of character), style, spacing, emphasis, color and color intensity.
“We accepted from the very first moment, as a Region, the proposal to modify the production disciplinary of Morellino di Scansano PDO, which has now finally been defined - commented the vice president of the Tuscany Region and councilor for agri-food Stefania Saccardi -. This is another piece that will contribute to composing that articulated mosaic that represents the future of one of the most important regional supply chains. A future that will have to face the new challenges of environmental sustainability and resilience to climate change. In this sense too, the Tuscany brand can represent a formidable driver for promoting the extraordinary richness and agrodiversity of our wines in markets around the world, and Morellino di Scansano is one of these jewels".
“We are sure that the producers of our denomination will be able to make the most of this possibility” - concludes the president of the Consortium.
