Orsero expands warehouse in Verona

The insertion of 30 new professionals is expected

Orsero SpA, one of the leaders in Mediterranean Europe for the import and distribution of fresh fruit and vegetables, has completed the expansion of the warehouse in Verona, the nerve center of the Group for the storage, ripening, processing and distribution of fruit and I and IV range vegetables in northern Italy. With a total area of approx. 18,500 square meters, the warehouse allows the daily handling of over 5,000 quintals of goods per day and the maturation of about 2.5 million boxes of bananas per year, also conveying the activities previously carried out on the Milan site and guaranteeing Orsero a greater operational efficiency which translates into a better ability to oversee the northern areas of the country and promptly meet customer needs.

The expansion follows the opening of the center dedicated to the preparation of fresh-cut products in April last year, located next to the warehouse over an area of approximately 1,000 square meters for a production capacity of 30,000 trays per day. Completed over 12 months, the expansion of the Veronese warehouse consists of a new and semi-automated processing room, a space dedicated to packaging of approx. 1800 square meters with a "slide" system on processing lines, of 6 new cold rooms with storage capacity increased by approx. 1000 pallet places, 9 new banana cells that double the ripening capacity of the structure, and a building adjacent to the warehouse of approx. 1000 m2 used as offices and areas dedicated to staff.

The hiring of 30 employees is expected, which brings the number of workers, including direct employees and third-party logistics companies, to 280. "The investment in the Verona plant improves not only the level of service offered to our customers but also the 'environmental impact of our business”, commented Tommaso Cotto, chief operating officer of the Orsero Group. "We worked on the energy efficiency of the structure during the investment phase and, at the same time, on the reduction of waste of precious resources such as fruit and vegetables, through actions such as the partnership with Banco Alimentare Onlus, which allows us to restore value to the product that is still good to eat; we are also about to implement a virtuous disposal process of vegetable waste, to be given as a by-product to biogas plants”.

Over the decades, the Orsero Group has expanded its activities both from a territorial point of view, up to the current geographical presence in Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Costa Rica, Colombia and Mexico, and from a product and sectorial, according to a so-called vertical integration model. In Italy the Group employs over 700 direct staff and cooperatives and is present with a network of seven warehouses located in Verona, Florence, Rome, Molfetta, Porto San Giorgio, Cagliari and Ispica as well as a direct presence in the main fruit and vegetable markets.
