Subject: Protection of Italian olive oil to safeguard 'Made in Italy' label of excellence
According to ISMEA statistics published on 31 January 2019, around 185 000 tonnes of Italian olive oil were produced in 2018 (57 % down on 2017). On the basis of this information, the Coldiretti farmers organisation predicts that, in 2019, shelves will contain less than half the number of bottles with extra virgin olive oil labelled ‘Made in Italy’ produced in 2018, compared to 2017. This dramatic drop in production is due to adverse climatic conditions, the spread of the Xylella pathogen and unfair competition from very cheap oil of dubious quality brought into Europe by third countries, mixed with home-produced oil and subsequently sold as Italian or European. Italy has 400 000 olive farms and the largest number of extra virgin olive oil quality labels in Europe (43 PDO and 4 PGI). Massive imports of oil from outside the EU are encouraging fraudulent practices to the detriment of oil that is 100 % Italian and consumers are entitled to know the origin of the oil they purchase.
In view of this:
1) Can the Commission say what action it will take to protect Italian olive oil producers more effectively?
2) In order to ensure greater transparency, will it ensure a more accurate indication of origin of mixed oils, listing all countries of origin on the label, rather than providing just the generic indication ‘blend of EU and non-EU olive oils’?".
