Fmcg: changes in the sector and the evolution of professions

Gi Group: about 1 role out of 2 will see its importance increase in the next 3/5 years

About 6,399 companies and almost 231,390 thousand employees are involved in the FMCG industry (Largo consumption, or Fast Moving Consumer Goods, i.e. all types of commercial products that are produced at a low unit cost and tend to sell quickly) and in particular in the Food & Beverage in Italy. A fundamental sector for the country system and a point of reference for the international market, also as a promotion of Made in Italy: exports are in fact worth about 44.6 billion euros, of which F&B 37.8 billion. The evolution of this industry in our country from a human resources point of view was discussed yesterday in the event "The future of professions in the Fmcg sector" organized by Gi Group in collaboration with Odm Consulting, with the support of Assobirra and Unionfood. The event takes its cue from the results that emerged from the "Star Matrix Fmcg" survey, a study with proprietary methodology on the evolution of roles and skills in the sector between now and the next 3/5 years.

Of the 233 roles analyzed overall by the research, which addressed food, beverage and Food & Beverage companies, about one in two (45%) will record growth in the near future, 42% will remain stable, while only 13% will suffer a decline. The roles and professions that, based on the analysis conducted, will grow the most concern the innovation and digital functions (82%), engineering (88%), R&D (60%), health / safety / environment (60%) and marketing (48%). Otherwise, those who will see a decline in their importance, especially in the face of automation or outsourcing of the activities they carry out, are general workers, data entry, IT operator, plant controller, IT operator, manager or marketing employee, inbound or outbound coordinator, logistic manager and warehouse worker.

Giorgio Alberti, Fmcg division manager of Gi Group: "Since the evolutionary trends, which were already underway in recent years, have accelerated in recent months, we believe it is crucial to ensure up-skilling and re-skilling of the entire sector personnel by strengthening technical and digital skills, primarily data analysis, but also the so-called soft skills, such as digital-mindset, accountability, speed and accountability". The evolution of roles and skills is also closely related to changes that characterize the sector: "five areas of strong change that we highlighted in the study: technological, organizational, market, socio-cultural and regulatory evolution", explained Rossella Riccò, senior HR Consultant and head of studies and research at Odm Consulting. "First of all, precisely the technological one: automation and digitalization, already strong in multinationals, will also characterize SMEs. In addition, there will be an increase in the use of e-commerce and retail platforms and big data analytics. At the same time, a 'organizational evolution, i.e. a diffusion of open innovation, a transition from vertical to lean structures and an increase in the importance of reputation linked to attention to sustainability and Diversity & Inclusion, as well as an increasingly centrality of the human factor and soft skills".
