EU industrial production: food is the fastest growing sector
Overall index in value climbs back up after the declines in 2023 and 2024
According to Eurostat, in 2025, the value of EU production sold at constant prices increased by 2.9% compared to 2024. This is the first growth since 2022 and follows two consecutive declines in 2023 (-1.5% compared to 2022) and 2024 (-1.9% compared to 2023).
EU production gradually increased each year between 2015 and 2018. In 2019, the value of production sold decreased slightly and fell sharply in 2020 due to the effects of the global pandemic. However, 2021 and 2022 saw increases in production across all industrial activity groups. In nominal terms, the value of production sold in the EU increased from €5.869 billion in 2024 to €6.09 trillion in 2025.
Considering the top 5 manufacturing activity groups, the largest increase in the value of production sold at constant prices was recorded in food products: +3.8% compared to 2024 and +11.2% compared to 2015.
The machinery and equipment sector recorded the second-largest increase (+3.3%), followed by motor vehicles, trailers, and semi-trailers (+0.6%). Meanwhile, chemicals and fabricated metal products (excluding machinery and equipment) recorded slight declines compared to 2024 (both -1.4%).
Chemicals and chemical products, as well as fabricated metal products (excluding machinery and equipment), were the only manufacturing groups to see a decline over the past decade.
