Bayer: Targeting Ten Innovative Agrochemicals

Herbicides and insecticides to implement corn crops and more

Bayer is achieving its previously announced ambitious goal of launching ten flagship products within ten years, beginning with major Crop Science innovations in the world's major agricultural regions. A flagship product is one expected to achieve peak sales of at least €500 million. The Plenexos insecticide and the Preceon Smart Corn System are already commercially available. In soybeans, Vyconic 1 is scheduled for launch next year in the United States and Canada, while Intacta 5+1 is scheduled for the 2027/2028 growing season in Brazil.

"We are delivering on our promises and offering farmers a new generation of breakthrough products. By connecting innovation in seed and crop protection, we can provide comprehensive farm solutions that help farmers manage risks, fully exploit yield potential, and improve their return on investment," said Rodrigo Santos , member of the Board of Management of Bayer AG and head of the Crop Science Division. "We are pursuing a highly focused and differentiated strategy for each of our segments, addressing different growth dynamics, farmer needs, and regional and competitive dynamics. Thanks to our economies of scale, we see the integration of these different business segments as a significant strategic advantage, which is reflected in our innovations and the way we serve farmers."

The Preceon Smart Corn System, a low-stature corn cultivation system with digital capabilities, is already generating value on the farm in Mexico, Italy, Spain, and the United States. Commercial launch in Argentina will begin this year. It offers a unique combination of benefits for farmers, including greater protection against extreme weather conditions, the flexibility to plant at higher densities, improved accessibility for standard farming equipment throughout the season, and a broader root system, all of which contribute to reduced agronomic risk, increased yield potential, and a better return on investment for farmers. By 2035, Bayer aims to reach a market penetration of 26 million acres. Preceon also stands out for its integration of digital capabilities within the system via FieldView. More than just a sales support platform, it serves as a collaboration tool between farmers and their agronomic advisors, helping customers fully leverage the system's agronomic and economic potential.

Plenexos, a new insecticide effective against a broad spectrum of sucking insects, has been introduced in Colombia, with Mexico, Brazil, and the United States to follow. Compared to other products, farmers can use up to 75% less active ingredient for pest control, thus helping to protect pollinators, beneficial insects, and other non-target organisms. With a focus on soybeans, cotton, fruits, and vegetables, Plenexos is expected to reach a maximum sales potential of €500 million by the mid-2030s.

Vyconi will be the industry's first soybean genetic trait package with five herbicide tolerance. It is designed to offer growers greater flexibility in weed control options and to better manage weed pressure and growing resistance challenges. Through integration with Bayer's advanced breeding pipeline, Vyconic will be introduced in high-performing varieties that have demonstrated yield increases of more than two bushels per acre, allowing growers to fully exploit the genetic yield potential and weed control flexibility sooner than ever before. Bayer anticipates strong adoption of Vyconic and the subsequent launch of HT5, helping it regain market leadership in North America by 2032.

Intacta 5+ will also offer Brazilian farmers five levels of herbicide tolerance and add new insect protection traits specifically designed for the Brazilian market. In soybeans, these and the next generation of herbicide tolerance traits, combined with the latest insect protection traits, are expected to generate sales potential of over €3 billion.
Other blockbuster products expected by the end of the decade include fourth-generation protection against corn rootworm, as well as the innovative herbicide Icafolin, with sales potential of €750 million by the mid-2030s. Taken together, the 10 flagship products will address the most pressing challenges facing farmers and are poised to contribute significantly to Bayer's growth over the next decade.
