Grana Padano closes 2020 positively

There is + 2% in production and + 3.7% in global consumption

"Despite the crisis generated by the health emergency, Grana Padano is confirmed as the most consumed PDO product in the world and continues to grow", a press release announced. In fact, the estimate of production in 2020 registers a + 2%. Lower consumption in the horeca sector was recovered from the increase in purchases in retail, both in Italy and abroad, especially in the EU. In fact, from January to November 2020, consumption of Grana Padano recorded an overall + 3.7%. In retail Italy reacts well with + 7.1%. Germany is confirmed as the leading foreign market, representing 27% of the export share, with a 7% increase in retail consumption compared to last year. Switzerland (+ 8%), Belgium (+ 6%) and France (+ 5%) also did well.

"At the moment our product has not been damaged by the crisis because, as some recent research reports, it is perceived by the consumer as one of the most reassuring products", says Renato Zaghini , president of the Grana Padano protection consortium, commenting on the 2020 data relating to consumption and product export, illustrated during the first general meeting organized entirely remotely. However, the health crisis caused by Covid-19 heavily penalized the horeca segment, favoring a strong contraction in consumption: "the difficulties due to the forced closure of restaurants forced us to review the annual communication and product plans. The retail segment has us allowed, however, to recover the gap in the horeca and this will allow us to close 2020 with a positive sign. This is due not only to Italian household consumption, which recorded a + 7.1%, but also to those of neighboring EU countries, including Germany and Switzerland stand out. However, we must be very cautious for the future because it is impossible to predict consumer behavior in the early months of 2021”, explains Zaghini.
