Vion plans to acquire a Belgian beef company

Objective: to consolidate the position in Western Europe

Vion Food Group has announced plans to acquire Adriaens, a beef producer based in Zottegem, Belgium, as a maneuver to expand its position in the country. Based in the Netherlands, Vion is an international food company with operations spanning the meat and plant-based meat substitute markets. The news of the planned acquisition of Adriaens follows a period of "intense collaboration" between the two companies.

With the acquisition, Vion says it wants to establish a strong supply chain that ensures quality and transparency in the beef market.
Company CEO Ronald Lotgerink said: “Our customers want to see what they are buying and where the product comes from. That is why we are working on regional chains that are selected based on the demand from our customers. By strengthening our beef and veal business in Belgium, we will achieve better uptake in Western Europe. Together with the Adriaens team, we hope to further strengthen the Group's relationships with farmers and customers in this important region of Western Europe for beef cattle".

Adriaens' 126 employees will be retained following the acquisition. In 2019, Vion announced that it had invested 35 million Euros to modernize the meat production plant in Boxtel, in Netherlands. The company's goals included consolidation of manufacturing operations and optimization of supply chain.
