Brussels promotes sustainable fish consumption

"Taste the Ocean", a social campaign supported by 9 European chefs, is starting

The European Commission has launched "Taste the Ocean", a new campaign on social networks in which the best European chefs promote the consumption of fish and shellfish caught or produced in a sustainable way. This campaign comes at a time when fishermen and fish farmers are facing the economic repercussions of health measures linked to the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, such as the closure of restaurants and catering services, which are the main points of purchase for their products. The commission also aims to raise consumer awareness of the importance of local, seasonal and sustainable consumption. So remember that, if produced correctly, fish and shellfish can have an important place in a sustainable diet, with a much lower environmental footprint and carbon footprint than most animal proteins on the market.

European Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, commented: “empowering consumers is essential to ensure more sustainable habits. Working side by side with some of Europe's most famous chefs, we want to educate consumers on the importance of individual fish choices for the health of the seas, while supporting sustainable fishing in our coastal areas".

During the next three months, the best chefs from nine EU countries (Belgium, Denmark, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Romania) will share their recipes based on different types of fish or shellfish. Other countries will join the initiative later in the year. During the campaign, the commission will also present the challenges and complexities of the sector. Brussels recalls that since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, it has adopted a series of temporary and specific measures to facilitate the challenges facing the fishing community.
