Rio Mare, Bolton Group brand, absolute market leader, announced that it is the first seafood brand in the world to have obtained EPD (Environmental Product Declaration or Environmental Product Declaration) certification from DNV - a leading international certification body. ). “A new piece that consolidates the partnership with Bolton Group. The EPD is a voluntary certification that allows to provide objective, comparable and verified information on the product, after having studied its life cycle. It is a concrete tool to control and reduce your environmental impact, allowing you to optimize production processes with a view to continuous improvement”, explains Stefano Santamato, Global Sales Manager FMCG / Retail sector of DNV.

The analysis of the life cycle of the product (LCA) provides, in fact, the quantification of the consumption of resources (materials, water, energy) and of the impacts on the environment, from the moment of fishing to distribution (specifically the references Tuna with 80gr olive oil and 65gr "filod'olio" tuna). The study, carried out with the support of Studio Fieschi e Soci - an environmental and strategic consultancy company for sustainability, will allow Rio Mare to optimize production processes and reduce costs / waste within the company, monitoring the improvement in performance. environmental quality of products, implementing a system of continuous improvement of the environmental quality of its product. Moreover, thanks to further processing of the data, it was possible to compare the results of the impact of tuna with respect to other products: what emerges is that, with the same caloric intake, canned tuna has an environmental impact comparable to that of fresh cheese or legumes. Considering the Mediterranean diet recommended by the Ministry of Health and the recommended weekly consumption of fish, the impact of the product appears in line with that of cereals and derivatives, and more contained than the impacts of vegetables, meat and dairy products.

“Through our choices and our actions, we want to continue to give a tangible example of our commitment to sustainable growth, protecting the environment. We are very proud to have added this additional governance tool, which will allow us to intervene in a more targeted manner throughout our supply chain and to demonstrate our transparency in the processes that involve the entire life cycle of our products", said Luciano Pirovano, Global Sustainable Development Director of Bolton Group's Food Business Unit. “In recent years, also thanks to the partnership with the WWF, we have worked hard to safeguard and protect the oceans. Thanks to this further stage of our sustainability path, thanks to the in-depth study of the environmental impact of the life cycle of our products, we will intervene in an even more ambitious way on the protection of all the planet's resources, from emissions into the atmosphere to consumption. water, soil and energy".
