Subject: crisis for Sardinian sheep's milk

Sardinia exports large quantities of dairy products produced from sheep’s milk to both EU and non-EU countries. The numerous Sardinian sheep breeders and producers pour all their resources into producing products that do not alter but retain their organoleptic properties until they reach the end consumer.

Low-cost imports of sheep’s milk from EU countries such as Romania and Bulgaria are adversely affecting competition on the EU market, forcing the sale price of Sardinian products down to an unbearably low level.

Given this state of affairs, there is a danger that recent demonstrations on the island in which Sardinian shepherds dumped their milk in the street could degenerate into chaos and public disorder.

1) Will the Commission take appropriate steps as a matter of urgency to protect the dairy market so that the market can remain competitive and safeguard Sardinian sheep’s milk and Sardinia’s producers?

2) Will it take equally urgent action to restore balance and fairness within the European Union and those rights of Sardinian producers which have been breached?".
